Standard Poodles originated in ancient times and there is still much controversy over their exact inception. It is certain that their gene pool contains the gene of the Barbet, a water dog, which is extinct now. The Standard Poodle produced the Toy and the Miniature Poodle. Dog breeders and rescues both offer pets; the former is more expensive than a rescue is.
